Real wedding: Leann and Kar Wai

The beautiful couple met at work in 2014, Kar Wai claims it was love at first sight. Proposing at St Regis on Kar Wai’s birthday made the perfect excuse to avoid suspicion from Leann, making it a successful romantic surprise.

Leann, being very petite, had her dress custom made with full lace, just how she wanted it to be. She also wanted to make sure that the dress was light enough to travel from Malaysia to Melbourne and suit their outdoor ceremony. The second dress was a fun, feminine, flowy and fluffy dress that Leann envisioned dancing the night away in. The couple chose Melbourne for their wedding as whenever they are there for a holiday, good things happen. It has a special place in their hearts. Kar Wai also wanted somewhere with a cold climate to avoid the heat back home. The destination was to be a mega holiday celebration and escape with family and friends. The stunning wedding had an intimate theme with a moody palette that would remind you of the warmth, love and intimacy of Christmas.

Real wedding: Monique and Justin

After having met the love of his life through work, Justin proposed during a 7-course degustation dinner cruise around Sydney harbor, popping the question in front of the opera house.

The couple had a destination wedding in Slovenia which took two years to plan. They tied the knot in beautiful Otočec Castle, which was built in the 13th century and is the only water castle in Slovenia. Surrounded by water, ducks and swans – it is the perfect destination for a fairytale wedding. The castle features rectangular fortress walls, circular-shaped towers, and an inner courtyard.

Monique and Justin then went all over Europe for their honeymoon, visiting Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Santorini, Positano and Switzerland, followed by a cruise stopping at Copenhagen, Tallin, St Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm.

Real wedding: Caroline and Filippo

One day, after having worked together for 6 years, Caroline and Fil started randomly chatting about their common interest in fitness. Before Fil left for Europe for 6 weeks, he came over daily to Caroline’s house and on the last day before he left, her kissed her. He was at her doorstep the day he returned.

A girl loves a good manicure! Caroline had previously said to Fil that if he was to ever propose, to make sure her nails were done first. Not realising the connection, Caroline went along to get her nails done when her sister invited her. When she got home, she found a trail of candles that lead to the lounge where Filippo was standing in a suit in the middle of the circle of candles, and popped the big question!

Caroline actually found her dream dress while watching the TV series ‘Married at first sight’. She found out the designer and took a risk by putting the deposit on the gown prior to attending the fitting. They flew over for one night to the Gold Coast and fortunately the dress was perfect!

Real wedding: Brooke and Chris

Thanks to their mutual friend playing cupid, Brooke and Chris were fated to be matched together. They have been inseparable since the day they met. Chris proposed to the love of his life during the beautiful sunrise at Sealy Lookout, the proposal was followed with a romantic weekend of romantic activities before they announced it to everyone!

The couple’s wedding theme was inspired by Coachella, they call their theme ‘Wedstival’. They wanted their wedding to feel like a festival and celebration – it had to be outdoors and natural. The couple set up an antique dressing table and filled it with jars of glitter and face paint for their guests to decorate themselves during the free-spirited reception. Brooke originally loved a bridal dress called ‘Sydney Dress’, but had no idea who the designer was. She ended up finding it by chance online and made an appointment right away. She loved the bohemian style dress as she thought it would perfectly suit their wedding theme.

Real wedding: Kelly and Ryan’s wedding in paradise

Kelly (29) and Ryan (33) absolutely adore the water, so it was a given that the couple celebrate their love in Kelly’s tropical hometown of Palm Cove. “From a proposal on a tropical island under the white cabana, surrounded by candles for a private beach dinner, to the planning of my dream wedding, I knew I was going to be marrying the most amazing guy in the world,” gushes Kelly. Though Kelly planned the entire day down to the smallest detail – this still couldn’t stop dark storm clouds from rolling in, the night before the celebration. A blessing in disguise, this temperamental weather made for some glorious photos and shots.

Kelly and her 67 guests were treated to a gorgeous celebration at The Reef House and a little surprise from Ryan. “My husband – who had broken his leg three months prior in a jet ski accident – surprised me by singing me a song because he couldn’t dance with me,” explains Kelly. “It was so romantic.” Kelly’s favourite moment of the day? “Having my little brother sing as I walked down the aisle was a highlight for me,” says Kelly of Connor Reid, an aspiring musician.

Real wedding: Jess and Jeremy’s mountain wedding

When Jeremy came home from four months of deployment, he proposed to Jess on a stunning clifftop that overlooked a babbling stream and breathtaking views. It was thus only fitting that the couple wed in an Australian location that was just as scenic.

Inviting their closest friends and family for an intimate weekend away at Spicer’s Peak Lodge – the rolling storm clouds and spectacular backdrop made for some gorgeous photos, as captured by Studio Impressions.

Q&A with Jess

The proposal. Details please!
Jeremy surprised me with a holiday at Binna Burra when he came back from a 4 months’ overseas deployment. He took me for a hike to a lookout and clearing over a mountain stream, and proposed on the rock ledge in front of the stunning view. We celebrated with champagne and a delicious dinner at the mountaintop restaurant.

How did you and Jeremy meet?
Jeremy and I actually met at the gym!

The wedding gown! Where from and why?
I chose my wedding gown at Belladonna Bridal in Brisbane. I was looking for really beautiful and intricate classic detailing but still wanted something I could dance and party in and feel comfortable in all day.

The style of the wedding day?
Classic, timeless and elegant. We let the venue speak for itself. We splurged on our venue, photographer and dresses. We also paid for guest accommodation so they could stay the night in a gorgeous lodge and celebrate with us the next morning for breakfast. After all, they are some of the most important parts and it was our venue that created the elegant atmosphere we were after. We saved on transport, with the ceremony and reception at the same place.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change?
Remembering to take my engagement ring off before the ceremony! I completely forgot and had to quickly take it off and put it on the other hand.

Any tips that you can give to future brides?
Keep your perspective centered. A wedding is just one day, and things do go wrong; embrace it. The weather on our day was absolutely crazy but as a result, some of our best photos are swirled in fog and rain!

How about your favourite moment?
We played the shoe game and cried with laughter. The crazy weather was also memorable. We had sun, rain, storms and fog. It made the view even more incredible and cosy inside.
